On 30 June 2020, the Law of the People's Republic of China on Safeguarding National Security in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (NSL) came into operation. Following the NSL, the US imposed sanctions on 11 HK and PRC-based individuals. In response to this move, the PRC imposed its own sanctions on 11 Americans.
